What is the meaning of Lent?

Professor of Systematic Theology, Fuller Theological Seminary
March 19, 2014

The Table: What is the meaning of Lent?

Veli-Matti: The Lent Season for me is a time of focusing our thoughts, prayers, and meditations on Christ’s suffering for our sake and on behalf of the world. It helps prepare our minds and lives to participate again in this blessed divine drama as Christ’s disciples and followers.

The Table: How can the celebration of Lent change us?

Veli-Matti: Lent is a constant reminder to us of the importance of becoming a true disciple and follower of Christ who is not living to himself or herself. It calls us to scrutinize our values, priorities, and dreams in light of the Easter message.

The Table: What do you read during Lent?

Veli-Matti: In addition to my normal devotional reading, I look for resources which tell about the ways some saints of the past prepared their hearts and minds during Lent season. I seek to learn from their devotion and wisdom.
